Getting started with Relex
Relex runs your legal practice end to end while your clients' identities stay encrypted in your browser. This guide walks the whole setup lifecycle once, in the order that works best. None of these steps blocks a case — you can open your first case at any point and come back to the rest.
1. Sign in
Sign in at relex.legal with Google or Apple. There is no login password to manage — the only password in Relex is the PII password below, and it protects data, not your account.
If you work with Claude, connect it once: install the plugin in Claude Code (/plugin marketplace add relexyou/relex-claude, then /plugin install relex-legal@relex) or add the custom connector https://relex.legal/api/mcp in the Claude app. Then say "Set up my practice workflow with Relex" and Claude walks you through everything below, one link at a time.
2. Set your PII password (Settings → Data Protection)
Your PII password derives an encryption key in your browser. Every client name, ID, and contact detail is sealed with it before anything reaches our servers — Relex stores only ciphertext and cannot decrypt it. Save the one-time recovery key somewhere safe; it is the only way back in if you forget the password.
Two things worth knowing:
- It takes effect instantly. The moment you click Create, the setting is live. There is nothing to propagate or sync.
- It belongs to the account you set it on. If a tool still reports it unset right after you created it, you are almost certainly signed into a different account than the one being checked.
3. Add your know-how (Settings → Knowledge)
Upload playbooks, templates, memos, and past matters. Relex redacts personal data client- and server-side, indexes only the redacted text into your private knowledge base, and auto-creates the parties it detects — encrypted under your PII password.
Your knowledge does two jobs:
- Retrieval — the case agent drafts in your style, grounded in your documents.
- Your ontology — indexed documents also grow a formal concept graph of your practice (doctrines, clause types, document types, jurisdictions). See it at Dashboard → Ontology; the agent reasons with it on every case. In a firm, every member's knowledge feeds one shared organisation graph, while personal graphs stay personal.
If an upload fails, the Knowledge page tells you why in plain terms. An "Indexing failed" entry has a Retry button (re-indexed in place); other failures ask you to remove the entry and upload the file again.
4. For firms: organisation and the shared vault
If you run a firm, create your organisation (Settings → Organization) and invite members by email with a role — staff or administrator. Then, as an administrator, set up the organisation vault on Settings → Data Protection: one shared key so the whole firm's client identities are protected together. Members unlock it automatically with their own personal password — nobody manages a second passphrase.
Staff members can skip knowledge setup entirely if they want and go straight to casework — the organisation's knowledge and ontology are already theirs to use.
5. To charge clients: the partner program
Registering in the partner program (relex.legal/partners/register) provisions your own payment account — client payments go straight to you, never through Relex. Once verified, invoices you send carry a card-payable link, and client intake can collect payment automatically.
Without partner registration you can still do everything else — send agreements, get them e-signed, issue invoices — but you collect payment yourself and mark the invoice paid manually.
6. Invite clients with guest links
An organisation can send a client a private guest link. The client joins exactly one case — yours stays yours — where they can tell their story, upload documents, sign the engagement, and follow progress. Guest links pair naturally with the partner program: registered partners can take payment as part of intake; unregistered firms invoice manually.
7. Cases and the agreements lifecycle
Open a case from the dashboard (or ask Claude). You never pick a tier or name — Relex's eval agent reads the matter and prices it. From there the case carries everything: documents, parties, drafts, timeline, collaborators.
Agreements live through a full lifecycle on the case: draft → send → e-sign → executed → renewal. That covers both directions of collaboration — when you invite a partner into a case and close an engagement with them, and when a guest client signs your engagement letter. Signers get secure, no-login signing links; executed agreements come back as sealed PDFs with a certificate of completion.
